Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra - Sophisticated Lady (Verve Records 1956) | This is a jazz music piece. There is a saxophone playing a solo in the lead. A tuba is playing the bass line. There is an electric guitar strumming chords. The rhythm is being played on the ride cymbal by the acoustic drums. The instrumentals have a sophisticated feel. This piece could be playing in the background at a classy restaurant. | 2011-01-02T10:43:06Z | RoundMidnightTV | "Sophisticated Lady" is a jazz standard, composed as an instrumental in 1932 by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, to which words were added by Mitchell Parish. The words met with approval from Ellington, who described them as "wonderful — but not entirely fitted to my original conception." That original conception was inspired by three of Ellington's grade school teachers. "They taught all winter and toured Europe in the summer. To me that spelled sophistication." Billie's accompanied by Joe Mondragon (bass), Alvin Stoller (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet), and Ben Webster (Tenor Saxophone). Recorded August 18, 1956, Los Angeles. (Verve Records) They say into your early life romance came And then this heart of yours burned a flame A flame that flickered one day and died away Then with disillusion deep in your eyes You learned that fools in love soon grow wise The years have changed you somehow I see you now Smoking, drinking, never thinking Of tomorrow, nonchalant Diamonds shining, dancing, dining With some man in a restaurant Is that all you really want? No, sophisticated lady I know, you miss the love you lost long ago And when nobody is nigh [near] you cry Smoking, drinking, never thinking Of tomorrow, nonchalant Diamonds shining, dancing, dining With some man in a restaurant Is that all you really want? No, sophisticated lady I know, you miss the love you lost long ago And when nobody is nigh [near] you cry Sophisticated lady you cry | ["Brass instrument", "Saxophone"] | ["jazz", "tuba", "saxophone", "electric guitar", "acoustic drums", "melancholic", "sophisticated"] | 9 | 5r4jLwjj_Ik | 698 | |
Killer Clarinet Player Doreen Ketchens Owning House of the Rising Sun | This is the amateur recording of a jazz music piece performed live on the street. The volume of the recording is quite low. There is a female vocalist singing upfront. The tuba is playing the bass line as an accompaniment to the vocals. The tuba player is playing a minimal acoustic drum kit made up of just a drum kick and a ride cymbal in the meantime. There is a swing feel to it. The quietness of the recording makes it sound like the music is coming from vinyl. It would suit perfectly as a piece in a movie playing on a vinyl record player. | 2011-03-19T15:02:45Z | nolatrip2011 | I recorded this March 18, 2011, right there on Royal Street, New Orleans, The next time you are in the French Quarter, look for her. She belongs on the stage!! I originally started filming because of the cute kid, but when she took her solo, I was glad I was filming. I don't know what happened to the audio on the last half; my finger must have accidentally covered up the microphone. New phone -- still getting used to it. If you turn the volume up all the way, you can make it out, albeit a bit muffled. It's worth it to hear the sousaphone solo and the last two verses of the song. Every time I go to New Orleans, I see musicians that are better than some stage performers. This is definitely one of them, in my opinion. The kid is a cutie though.... I love how he does what the trombone player does toward the end. | ["Jazz", "Music", "Musical instrument"] | ["amateur recording", "quiet", "street performance", "jazz music", "female vocal", "tuba", "acoustic drums", "kick drum", "ride cymbal", "swing", "vinyl feel"] | 9 | Ck_bvV8Aa-k | 1397 |
