I don't own an El Capistan myself, but a guy I know, Wouter (WtrPlyr), and I got together to set up this concept and compare some of the tape delays I have to the El Capistan, which is a tape delay modeler/emulator (a very nice one and the best out there, in stompbox format, that is).\r\n\r\nWe used the DigiTech JamMan Stereo and recorded a dry loop every time and routed that through the El Capistan and the RE-501 - both of them were in a true bypass looper (RJM Music Effects Gizmo).\r\n\r\nYou be the own judge of which one you prefer. I, personally, prefer the RE-501, which is one of my favorite tape delays. I prefer its natural modulation (I don't mean the Chorus, to be clear) and its reverbish character. I find the El Capistan to be a little muffled and dark, in comparison. But hey, that's my taste. The tune has several versions and at least two of them are totally different tunes.  The one played here is, I think,  by far the most common in North America and is played in the key of Am.  It is a tune of Scottish origin (perhaps derived from an air by the great Neil Gow? -- not sure about that).  \r\n\r\nThe tune in this form commemorates the battle of Culloden Moor, when, on cold spring morning in 1746 the English Army surprised and massacred a Scottish highlander army and thereby ended the Jacobite Rebellion.  In years that followed thousands of apparently completely innocent Scotts were murdered by the English general the Duke of Cumberland (aka the Butcher) to punish them and to assure no more highlander rebellions would occur.  \r\n\r\nBut there is another version of \"Cold Frosty Morning\" which is an old tyme quadrille (6/8 time? or 3/4 time?) which was played in using an altered tuning and is in the key of D. The Fiddlers Companion attributes this tune to Stephen B. Tucker of Mississippi who started fiddling in late 1860's and was recorded for the Library of Congress in 1939. I plan to research this more. And of course the bluegrass folks have a ball with it. This was a serious time-suck, well over 100 hours total.\n\n     It is far from perfect, a key sticks now and then.  Also, the features that make it noiseless can really make it hard to type.  I lowered the rubber bar and the keys fly a bit faster, but I think I am going to avoid 'noiseless', because I noticed it on my other typewriter also.\n\n     The bell, is beyond me.  They were crafty in design, perhaps a bit too crafty.  If I change the feet, I'll do a video on it.  As of now, they stay.  Also, I left the original paint.  This typewriter has lived a long life with it, and I hate adding anything that is not needed.  The rubber had to go, but the paint stayed.
