Towards the end of the video he explains why the frets on his guitar are crooked, a question a lot of people are wondering.  Basically, the fanned frets on his new Greenfield guitar are both comfortable ergonomically and provide more accurate intonation.  \r\n\r\nAnd although he doesn't mention it in this video, fan frets handle dropped tunings much better than regular frets do (and since Andy plays in so many different alternate tunings, fanned frets must be a dream come true). I slowed down Basil's rhythm track using a program called \"MixCraft\" so I could play along easier. I have a BL 710 pickup in my S-10 ShoBud with the white fretboard. Bill's a genius guitar pickup inventor. Here's a video of him played in 2008 at a NAMM show... \r\n\r\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHIZMuNhF5s\r\n\r\nOn this particular Fender 400 guitar (which is as old as I am), I have 10 pedals. I actually have Basil's 3rd, 4th and 5th pedals down on 8, 9 and 10 for leg comfort. So I can use either pedals 4 and 5 or 8 and 9 to lower strings 2 and 6, respectively. That makes it a lot easier for me while playing. Pedals 1 and 2 are unchanged. I also used pedal 6 to raise string 1 by itself a whole tone, which I use in the song in a few places. Also, I only lower strings 2 and 4 a half tone, respectively, with pedals 8 and 9 because the pedals are way too tight when pressed together; so I don't lower strings 6 and 8 with pedals 8,9; but I DO lower strings 2 and 6 with pedal 4 (my C6th pedal), and strings 4 and 8 with pedal 5 (My A6th pedal) as Basil does. When I need to press both pedals, that is 4 and 5 together, I press 8 and 9. The pedal is still a bit tight, but not as bad as pressing pedals 4 and 5 (which lowered 4 and 8 also. On my ShoBud, I can lower multiple strings like butter, and it's not a concern; but the pedals are close together and that is more uncomfortable. So each guitar has its pros and cons. \r\n\r\nIdeally, it would be best to set up a more modern S-10 pedal steel with 5 pedals and 5 knees to handle this tuning. That way you can arrange everything comfortably and with ease of use if you choose a good manufacturer. Unfortunately, many steel guitar builders are cheap, others are arrogant because some big names play their brand and have become sloppy and careless in their work, and others just don't know what they're doing. I've been burned numerous times. \r\n\r\nThe A7th tuning is not for everyone. If you need tablature and for someone to explain everything to you, it's not available for this tuning simply because it's not a standard tuning used by millions of people (as is E9th and C6th). I only know two people using this A7th tuning setup, Basil Henriques and me. It's not complicated, just different. The tune has several versions and at least two of them are totally different tunes.  The one played here is, I think,  by far the most common in North America and is played in the key of Am.  It is a tune of Scottish origin (perhaps derived from an air by the great Neil Gow? -- not sure about that).  \r\n\r\nThe tune in this form commemorates the battle of Culloden Moor, when, on cold spring morning in 1746 the English Army surprised and massacred a Scottish highlander army and thereby ended the Jacobite Rebellion.  In years that followed thousands of apparently completely innocent Scotts were murdered by the English general the Duke of Cumberland (aka the Butcher) to punish them and to assure no more highlander rebellions would occur.  \r\n\r\nBut there is another version of \"Cold Frosty Morning\" which is an old tyme quadrille (6/8 time? or 3/4 time?) which was played in using an altered tuning and is in the key of D. The Fiddlers Companion attributes this tune to Stephen B. Tucker of Mississippi who started fiddling in late 1860's and was recorded for the Library of Congress in 1939. I plan to research this more. And of course the bluegrass folks have a ball with it. An 11-position Shift switch selects the maximum transposition interval ranging from D (Detune), a shift of 17 cents, through Minor 2nd, Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Major 6th, Minor 7th, 1 Octave, 2 Octaves and 3 Octaves. A three position toggle switch controls whether the pitch is transposed up, down or both. In Dual mode, two pitch-shifted signals are output. One follows the shift knob as if in the Up position while the other creates a harmony. Dual Mode settings include M3 up + P5 up, P5 up + 1 Oct down, 1 Oct up + 1 Oct down and many others. A Blend knob controls the mix of the dry signal and the effected signal, and an EXP jack enables the player to control pitch and glissando with an expression pedal.\n\nThe Latch button selects Latch or Momentary mode which affects how the footswitch and EXP input behave. In Latch mode, the footswitch toggles between effect on and buffered bypass each time it\u2019s pressed and the EXP input continuously varies pitch. In Momentary mode the effect is only on while the footswitch is depressed and when it is released the Pitch Fork goes into bypass.\n\nIn Latch mode the EXP input controls pitch shift amount, ranging from unity to the interval set by the Shift knob, and pitch varies continuously throughout the expression pedal\u2019s range. In Momentary mode the EXP input controls glissando rate for the Pitch Fork\u2019s footswitch. When the bypass footswitch is pressed, the Pitch Fork jumps from bypass to the interval set by the Shift knob. The amount of time it takes to reach that new note is the glissando rate. When the footswitch is released the pitch will return to unity at the same rate. That glissando time can vary between 4 milliseconds to two seconds depending on the heel/toe position of the expression pedal.
