He gained early exposure to music through his family's participation in the choir of the Antioch Baptist Church, through the blues and country-western music he heard on the radio, and through music classes, especially at Sumner High School. Berry was still attending high school when he was sent to serve three years for armed robbery at a Missouri prison for young offenders. After his release and return to St. Louis, he worked at an auto plant, studied hairdressing, and played music in small nightclubs. Berry traveled to Chicago in search of a recording contract; Muddy Waters directed him to the Chess brothers. Leonard and Phil Chess signed him for their Chess label, and in 1955 his first recording session produced Maybellene (a country-and-western-influenced song that Berry had originally titled Ida Red), which stayed on the pop charts for 11 weeks, cresting at number five. Berry followed this success with extensive tours and hit after hit, including Roll Over Beethoven (1956), School Day (1957), Rock and Roll Music (1957), Sweet Little Sixteen (1958), Johnny B. Goode (1958), and Reelin' and Rockin' (1958). His vivid descriptions of consumer culture and teenage life, the distinctive sounds he coaxed from his guitar, and the rhythmic and melodic virtuosity of his piano player (Johnny Johnson) made Berry's songs staples in the repertoire of almost every rock-and-roll band.\n\nAt the peak of his popularity, federal authorities prosecuted Berry for violating the Mann Act, alleging that he transported an underage female across state lines for immoral purposes. After two trials tainted by racist overtones, Berry was convicted and remanded to prison. The tune has several versions and at least two of them are totally different tunes.  The one played here is, I think,  by far the most common in North America and is played in the key of Am.  It is a tune of Scottish origin (perhaps derived from an air by the great Neil Gow? -- not sure about that).  \r\n\r\nThe tune in this form commemorates the battle of Culloden Moor, when, on cold spring morning in 1746 the English Army surprised and massacred a Scottish highlander army and thereby ended the Jacobite Rebellion.  In years that followed thousands of apparently completely innocent Scotts were murdered by the English general the Duke of Cumberland (aka the Butcher) to punish them and to assure no more highlander rebellions would occur.  \r\n\r\nBut there is another version of \"Cold Frosty Morning\" which is an old tyme quadrille (6/8 time? or 3/4 time?) which was played in using an altered tuning and is in the key of D. The Fiddlers Companion attributes this tune to Stephen B. Tucker of Mississippi who started fiddling in late 1860's and was recorded for the Library of Congress in 1939. I plan to research this more. And of course the bluegrass folks have a ball with it. We visited the Cayman Turtle Farm, an attraction we highly recommend. We were able to have an amazing time looking at and holding turtles,  with turtles, looking at alligators and sharks, feeding birds, sliding down a fun water slide, and we even saw a variety of wild lizards!  This internationally renowned research and conservation center for sea turtles was a memorable part of our trip.  The reason you only see some of us for most of this experience and Zac just does a couple activities is because we were at the doctor for his eye most of the day.  This was the day after he was in an accident on the Carnival Magic Cruise Ship in the waterpark where the water pressure was too high and sprayed him full force directly in the eye.
