Hearing the drum mix by itself will actually give you a very good idea what it takes to mix an additional layer of drums (mine!) into an existing and, essentially, finished song:\n\nKick, snare and toms, are LOUD and especially articulate. The mix is also very bright. This coupled with a slight high-pass filter on the track underneath (in this case, Try It Out by Skrillex) immediately makes my drums pop out more, and without this approach my drum mix would be drowned out by the already loudly mastered version of Try It Out. My goal is to get the track underneath as loud as possible (for full immersion) while still hearing every note I am playing on the drums. Its been over 50 years since a major calypsonian went into the studio with a bunch of jazz players. This CD is cause for serious celebration!\n\nIn many ways this project was inspired by Lord Kitcheners forays into jazz in the 1950s. Kitchener (real name Aldwyn Roberts; now respectfully nicknamed Grandmaster) was arguably the greatest songwriter in the history of calypso. Born in Trinidad in 1922 (where he passed away in 2000) he was largely responsible for calypsos evolution into a melodically and harmonically sophisticated music. He was a fabulous lyricist as well, and a great commentator and humorist on a wide array of subjects. He emigrated from Trinidad to London in 1948, where he discovered jazz\u2014and wrote a very hip composition called \"Bebop Calypso\" praising Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He stayed in London throughout the 50s, playing with jazz musicians and making numerous recordings that revolutionized calypso music. Along with Trinidadian musicians like Rupert Nurse, Fitzroy Coleman, and Russ Henderson, Kitchener created a new jazz-influenced big band sound that suited calypso perfectly\u2014and when he returned to Trinidad, 17 years later, it was as a hugely successful entertainer with scores of hit records to his credit. Nearly half this album is drawn from his songbook. \"Oddly enough,\" Narell points out, \"there has been very little interaction between calypsonians and small jazz bands since the 50s. As a jazz musician, Paul Vogler has appeared on the bill with Thelonius Monk Jr., Dr. Billy Taylor & The New York Voices.\r\n\r\nPaul Vogler was pecussionist in the 90's band \"Radio Kings\", catering to the swing dance craze of the time. Also, during that time, Paul assisted in the creation of The Bessie Bus\", a mobile jazz and blues education program, winner of the 1997 Dorothy Mullen National Arts Award. He also helped produce \"When the Spirit Moves\", a traveling exhibit of the National Afro-American Museum, exhibited in the United States (including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC) and traveling internationally through the US State Department.\r\n\r\n\"Our Minds Are On Georgia\" a grant-funded program incorporating writing blues lyrics and producing a CD; designed to meet 3rd grade curriculum requirements for the Georgia unit of study was co-created by Paul. Paul continued composing, arranging and producing music and video for museums, educational programs and institutions including: Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Tennessee Aquarium, S.T.A.R.S. (Students Taking A Right Stand), Hamilton Beech Corporation and Americus Records. He also expanded into exhibit development and consulting for museums including: Atlanta Children's Museum, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Miami Children's Museum, Five Points Museum, Denver, CO and Creative Discovery Museum, Chattanooga, TN.\r\n\r\nIn the mid 1990's the islands called to Paul and he began playing steel pan, appearing on the bill with such greats as Ziggy Marley. Paul currently resides in Atlanta, GA with his wife, daughter, and dog Hank. Paul lectures and teaches Percussion, World Music, Jazz, and Electronic Music at several Colleges and Universities, as well as teaching as a private tutor. Paul's' original company, Lake Productions, continues to act as a consultant, recording for various bands and individuals. The O = a Tone, that means on the rim of the djemb\u00e9 with fingers closed, and the hand more straight.\r\n\r\nThe O with an X thru it = a Slap,  that means, again on the rim, but then fingers opened, and hand more relaxed. The way I learned slapping, is by focussing on letting the ringfinger bounce first -- so you get a bit of an 45 degree angle -- flying in sideways. \r\n\r\nThen there is the Closed O (black little ball) -- That's the bass -- it is in the center of the drum, and you get the best sound by letting your hand bounce on the center. Wether fingers spread or closed, depends on personal taste.. With fingers open, it rings more.\r\n\r\nAnd last there are accents and muffles... An accent is a bit louder then the rest and is signed with an ^. The Muffle, is doing the strike for example a tone, but with one hand on the skin... So it cant really ring. The muffle is shown by an underscore _ under the note. \r\n\r\nThese songs are just to get you to hear the African rhythms...
