In this Video, Dorit Chrysler, co-founder of the New York Theremin Society, explores the sonic possibilities of the Theremini, Moog's latest addition to the theremin family.

The Theremini is a re-imagining of one of the oldest electronic musical instruments in history, and Bob Moog's first love -- the Theremin. The Theremini combines a powerful sound engine derived from Moog's award winning synthesizer, Animoog, with the traditional no-touch playing of a traditional Theremin. 

Assistive pitch quantization allows each player to adjust the instrument's level of playing difficulty. At the maximum position, the Theremini will play every note in a selected scale perfectly, making it impossible to play a wrong note. As this control is decreased, more expressive control of pitch and vibrato becomes possible. After graduating from New York's School of Industrial Art in 1952, Hesse studied at New York's Pratt Institute (1952--1953) and Cooper Union (1954--1957), then at the Yale School of Art and Architecture (1957--1959), where she studied under Josef Albers and received a B.F.A. Upon returning to New York she made friends with many young artists. In 1961, she met and married sculptor Tom Doyle. In August 1962 Eva Hesse and Tom Doyle participated in an Allan Kaprow Happening at the Art Students League of New York in Woodstock, New York. There Hesse made her first three dimensional piece: a costume for the Happening. In 1963 Eva Hesse had a one-person show of works on paper at the Allan Stone Gallery on New York's Upper East Side.
The couple lived and worked in an abandoned textile mill in the Ruhr region of Germany for about a year during 1964-1965. Hesse was not happy to be back in Germany, but began sculpting with materials that had been left behind in the abandoned factory: first relief sculptures made of cloth-covered cord, electrical wire, and masonite, with playful titles like Eighter from Decatur and Oomamaboomba. Returning to New York City in 1965 she began working in the materials that would become characteristic of her work: latex, fiberglass, and plastics. Eva Hesse had also an interest in drawing as evinced by her numerous workbooks.
She was associated with the mid-1960s postminimal anti-form trend in sculpture, participating in New York exhibits such as ""Eccentric Abstraction"" and ""Abstract Inflationism and Stuffed Expressionism"" (both 1966). In September 1968 Eva Hesse began teaching at the School of Visual Arts. Her only one-person show of sculpture in her lifetime was ""Chain Polymers"" at the Fischbach Gallery on W. 57th Street in New York in November 1968; her large piece Expanded Expansion showed at the Whitney Museum in the 1969 exhibit ""Anti-Illusion: Process/Materials"". There have been dozens of major posthumous exhibitions in the United States and Europe, including at The Guggenheim Museum (1972), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2002), The Drawing Center in New York (2006) and the Jewish Museum of New York (2006).
Except for fiberglass, most of her favored materials age badly, so much of her work presents conservators with an enormous challenge. Arthur Danto, writing of the Jewish Museum's 2006 retrospective, refers to ""the discolorations, the slackness in the membrane-like latex, the palpable aging of the material... Yet somehow the work does not feel tragic. Instead it is full of life, of eros, even of comedy... Each piece in the show vibrates with originality and mischief.""
In 1969 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her death in 1970 ended a career spanning only ten years.
Her art is often viewed in light of all the painful struggles of her life including escaping the Nazis, her parents' divorce, the suicide of her mother when she was ten, her failed marriage and the death of her father. Danto describes her as ""cop[ing] with emotional chaos by reinventing sculpture through aesthetic insubordination, playing with worthless material amid the industrial ruins of a defeated nation that, only two decades earlier, would have murdered her without a second thought."" She also always felt she was fighting for recognition in a male dominated art world.
Hesse is one of a few artists who led the move from Minimalism to Postminimalism. Danto distinguishes it from minimalism by its ""mirth and jokiness"" and ""unmistakable whiff of eroticism"", its ""nonmechanical repetition"". She was influenced by, and in turn influenced, many famous artists of the 1960s through today. Eva Hesse was for many artists and friends who knew her so charismatic that her memory remains simply unforgettable to this day.

'Blade' features drums, synthesizer (Yahama DX-7), alto saxophone, voices, a bicycle pump, coins, pieces of wood, glasses of water and probably a few things I have forgotten about. This was recorded at Fanshawe College with my classmates in the Music Industry Arts program. We had some free time and I had an idea kicking around in my head, so we just went into one of the studios (the small one) and recorded it one afternoon.  (I left the MIA programme shortly after the recording to work, saved up some money and then went on to study at university).

Young Sycamore' has live vocal and percussion parts that weren't recorded. It was only performed once. The lyrics were adapted from a poem by Wlliam Carlos Williams. The piece was written/played using the software 'PC Composer' and a midi controller.  It was recorded at the Computer Music room at Carleton University.

'Untitled' features an EMS Synthi 100, a synthesizer from the early 70s. The device  takes up half of small room and is interesting to use because you have to physically connect all the different sound items like sine waves, noise and filters. According to Wikipedia, only about 30 of these synthesizers were produced and their original selling price was 25,000 USD (the equivalent of over $100,000 USD today).  If I had known it was so rare and expensive, maybe I would have appreciated it more back then. 

I found using it frustrating at first because it was very difficult get the exact sound you were aiming for. And once you got the sound, it was almost impossible to replicate it (even if you wrote down every setting). I got in the habit of just having one of the tape machines recording at all times.  

The actual composition is by one of my classmates, Heather Baird. I made the sounds and she decided how to assemble them. 

The piece was recorded in Carleton U's audio lab (Michael Bussière was in charge of the computer room and audio recording lab at that time).  The arpeggios and background sustained notes are from a Korg Poly61 synthesizer.

For 'Sting Quartet No. 2', all the notes were typed into a computer (using the PC Composer programme) and then played back through a midi controller before being recorded on a reel-to-reel tape deck. Some of the sections were composed traditionally (e.g., following the normal customs of melody and harmony) and some parts were written using a repeating 12-tone system. The composition was written for a string quartet, but when doing the computer version I added some 'impossible' parts.

'Mammals I Have Known and Loved' features the EMS Synthi 100, a tam tam (a kind of gong, but this time played with a violin bow), alto saxophone, empty pop bottles, voices, loops made of sound effects and laughter. The voices mainly came from outtakes of interviews I had been recording while doing some work at the campus radio station.
