Returning from a musical performance in Sialkot, Ustad Joona was killed in a car accident near Muridke on June 17, 2010. He is survived by his four sons. His eldest son Naveed Hussain Joona is a celebrated Tabla player of Pakistan and won the first prize in Tabla in the All Pakistan Tabla Sangat 2009. The Sangat was organized by Ustad Altaf Hussain Khan Tafoo who was the judge in this Sangat competition. Ustad Younas Khan taught Tabla to young musicians of Lahore.
