This is a tune which was written around 1914 by Howard Johnson (words), and Theodore Morse (music). Lyrics: M is for the million things she gave me. O means only that she's growing old. T is for the tears she shed to save me. H is for her heart of purest gold. E is for her eyes with love-light shining. R means right, and right, she'll allways be. Put them all together, they spell MOTHER, a word that means the world, to me. Played by Thomas Grillo on Moog Etherwave Pro theremin. Please excuse the ambient noise of two computers, as my mixer was not functioning, and I was forced to use a live microphone from a camcorder. Just turn your trebble down a bit. Their military bands, called Janissary bands, were quite popular, even in Europe. Mozart borrowed from their sound and rhythm to produce this work, which became one of the big hits of Mozart's day. Its popularity has rarely waned since then. The final movement of the sonata, Rondo Alla Turca, captures the military bands' brassy sound. In its whirling feel, it can evoke another aspect of Turkish culture which has captivated Westerners--the whirling motion of the Sufi dervishes as they perform their ancient ritual of peace and wholeness, though the Rondo whirls at light speed, in contrast to the gentle movement of the Mevlevi.
