The tune has several versions and at least two of them are totally different tunes. The one played here is, I think, by far the most common in North America and is played in the key of Am. It is a tune of Scottish origin (perhaps derived from an air by the great Neil Gow? -- not sure about that). The tune in this form commemorates the battle of Culloden Moor, when, on cold spring morning in 1746 the English Army surprised and massacred a Scottish highlander army and thereby ended the Jacobite Rebellion.
