As I mentioned, Riff 1 is the main hook, and is played starting with the intro, and then later on in choruses. It is a very simple repeating pattern once you get the rhythm down. 

Riff 2 expounds on the simple delay part you can hear on the second half of each verse. I am using a quarter note delay (496ms) with quite a bit of feedback. And finally, I use Riff 3 to build the bridge. Both Riff 2 and Riff 3 also make use of a wah pedal.

This lesson series will explore rhythms and instruments from the northeast of Brazil. Using four-way coordination and groove technique Scott will apply these polyrhythmic voices melodically around the drumkit and discuss concepts for applying these rhythms in a jazz, funk, or rock context. 

Scott will also discuss the parallels these rhythms share with New Orleans 2nd Line and Mardis Gras Indian grooves as well as concepts for improvising around the drumset using the Maracatu and Baião ostinato pattern as a foundation. Techniques and soloing methods for playing these rhythms with the pandeiro and drumset together will also be discussed.


ABOUT SCOTT KETTNER:
Scott Kettner is a drummer, percussionist, composer, recording artist, and Artistic Director/Founder of world renowned Brazilian fusion band Nation Beat, who performed together with Willie Nelson at the 2008 Farm Aid concert. He's also the founder and director of Maracatu New York, the first organized maracatu group in the USA.

A graduate of the New School University Jazz and Contemporary Music program and a long time student of Billy Hart, Kettner has studied intensively in Brazil and has become a member of one of the legendary traditional Maracatu groups from Recife, Brazil, Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante (founded in 1906). 

In 2003 and 2005 Scott was awarded an artist grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council for his project Maracatu New York and Nation Beat and was elected a 2006 Latin Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. State Department. 

As a sideman, Kettner has worked and recorded with world famous Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, Klezmer trumpeter Frank London and the Klezmer All Star Brass Band, Grammy award-winning producer Andres Levin, and many others.

Performed by the outstanding young harpist, Anne Denholm, the piece was commissioned by Glasgow University for Professor Keith Vickerman, to celebrate his groundbreaking research in the field of African Sleeping Sickness. Awuya is inspired by the changing forms of deadly trypanosomes, by Central African drums and harp, and by a lullaby from a tribe decimated by sleeping sickness in the 1940s. The original words of the lullaby, sung to a little girl called Awuya, are hauntingly reminiscent of the symptoms of the disease. In his new film, Laurie Irvine has incorporated these ideas, enhancing Anne's powerful performance.

What do these signs mean? The O = a Tone, that means on the rim of the djembé with fingers closed, and the hand more straight.

The O with an X thru it = a Slap,  that means, again on the rim, but then fingers opened, and hand more relaxed. The way I learned slapping, is by focussing on letting the ringfinger bounce first -- so you get a bit of an 45 degree angle -- flying in sideways. 

Then there is the Closed O (black little ball) -- That's the bass -- it is in the center of the drum, and you get the best sound by letting your hand bounce on the center. Wether fingers spread or closed, depends on personal taste.. With fingers open, it rings more.

And last there are accents and muffles... An accent is a bit louder then the rest and is signed with an ^. The Muffle, is doing the strike for example a tone, but with one hand on the skin... So it cant really ring. The muffle is shown by an underscore _ under the note. 

These songs are just to get you to hear the African rhythms... If there is any piece you like, just let me know, and I will make videos dissecting  the rhythms part by part -- so you can SEE how it is don on the drum. 

I do this, to inspire people to start drumming, and hopefully in the nearby future these files come in handy when we've started our drumcircle, so people can practice at home.

In Episode 6 of Snare Drum TV, you'll learn a simple Triple Paradiddle drum exercise that will quickly help you improve your triple paradiddle snare drum rudiments. This exercise follows the same guidelines that the single paradiddle exercise and double paradiddle exercise were based on so it should be relatively easy to learn.  

Every drummers should know all of the paradiddle drum rudiments so be sure to take the time to learn what a Triple Paradiddle is and then use this exercise to master them!
