Performed by the outstanding young harpist, Anne Denholm, the piece was commissioned by Glasgow University for Professor Keith Vickerman, to celebrate his groundbreaking research in the field of African Sleeping Sickness. Awuya is inspired by the changing forms of deadly trypanosomes, by Central African drums and harp, and by a lullaby from a tribe decimated by sleeping sickness in the 1940s. The original words of the lullaby, sung to a little girl called Awuya, are hauntingly reminiscent of the symptoms of the disease. In his new film, Laurie Irvine has incorporated these ideas, enhancing Anne's powerful performance.

The Donald Sinta Quartet, First Prize Winner of the 2013 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition, has earned praise from audiences and critics alike for its committed performances, recordings, and distinctive repertoire.  Other competition successes include the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the 2013 Coleman Chamber Music Competition and First Prize in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition. 

The DSQ was featured for the world premiere performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom's Concerto Grosso for Saxophone Quartet and Band, joining the University of Michigan Symphony Band as a soloist for a tour through China and Los Angeles. Performances took place at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Shanghai Conservatory. The quartet's subsequent recording of the work garnered praise: Audiophile Audition declared them ""superb musicians"" and American Record Guide called it ""the highlight of the album."" 

Upcoming engagements include festival appearances at Music from Angel Fire and the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, recitals at St. Bonaventure University and Market Square Concerts, and a concerto performance with the Dallas Wind Symphony. Recent highlights abroad are recitals in St. Andrews, Scotland, where the group was featured at the 16th World Saxophone Congress, and in Paris, France and Thessaloniki, Greece.  

The Quartet's repertoire is diverse, ranging from commissions by today's emerging composers to standards from the saxophone quartet literature to transcriptions by master composers such as Dvorak, Schubert, and Shostakovich. As advocates of new music, the DSQ commissions and premieres new works regularly and runs the National Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition, which selects two new quartet works from up-and-coming composers annually. 

The group is named for its mentor, legendary University of Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta. The DSQ 's members are Selmer-Paris Artists and perform on Selmer Paris Saxophones.

When, in 1822, the publisher C. F. Peters requested music from Beethoven, the composer wrote out new scores of old works, including the Marches, WoO. 18-20, to which he added trios (the one for WoO 20 is in F major). Also, Beethoven renamed each march ""Zapfenstreich"" (tattoo). Peters found the works inferior and did not publish them. The March in C major, WoO. 20, was first printed in 1888 as part of the Complete Edition of Beethoven's Works, published in Leipzig by Breitkopf & Härtel. The March may have been first performed on August 25, 1810 at a tournament honoring the Empress Maria Ludovika, held in Laxenburg.
The March in C major, WoO. 20, is for military band, including two each of oboe, clarinet, horn, trumpet, bassoon, tambourine and one each of piccolo, contrabassoon and triangle and a pair of cymbals. Like all marches, Beethoven's March in C major is similar to a minuet in form. The first theme is eight measures long and repeated exactly, closing on the dominant, G major. Although the theme is very narrow in range it is rhythmically active with a propulsive dotted-rhythm feel, accompanied incessantly by the triangle. Beethoven expands the traditional formal parameters of the second half of the march, modulating to D major and taking his time to reach the expected return to the main theme, after which he continues with developmental fragmentation before the repeat.
The trio, in F major, is organized in a traditional fashion with the second half rounded out by the return to the first theme. The fluidity of the first part contrasts with the fortissimo chords of the second, which dissolves into a quieter dynamic for the reprise of the first theme. Recorded this on March 18th, 2010 over spring break. Have been meaning to post a recording of the Prelude for a while, and since I got some new microphones (2 MXL 993 Microphones) I figured it was a good opportunity to do so. Before yesterday (the 18th) it had been a few months since I'd played it, so it is a bit rough in a few parts. Also, I toyed with putting some reverb on it since the room I was in was not exactly ideal, but it tended to just muddy it up so what is heard is the completely clean signal. 

I was pretty happy with the result of this, and the microphones were definitely worth the money I paid for them. Hope you all enjoy!
